A hair transplant trip to Istanbul is usually short, but it works best when every day is planned. This guide walks through the weeks before you travel, the days you spend in Istanbul, the flight home and the months that follow, with a packing list at the end.

Before you book flights
- Get an assessment first. Send clear photos of your hair and your medical history so a doctor can review your case. Book flights only after your plan and dates are confirmed.
- Check your travel documents. Make sure your passport is valid for your whole stay and check entry rules for your nationality on the official e-Visa website of the Republic of Türkiye.
- See a travel-medicine provider. The CDC advises travellers planning medical treatment abroad to see a travel-medicine provider at least four to six weeks before the trip; its medical tourism guidance is worth reading.
- Arrange travel insurance and check what it covers for planned procedures.
- Plan time off. Most people return to desk work within a few days, but you will want a quiet first week.
The week before you travel
Your clinic will give you pre-operative instructions; ours are on the hair transplant instructions page. Follow them closely, and never stop a prescribed medicine without speaking to your own doctor first. Confirm your arrival time, your hotel and your transfer the day before you fly.
Day 1: arrival in Istanbul
Istanbul has two international airports, Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, so check which one your flight uses before you share your details for the transfer. After the transfer to your hotel, rest, drink water and eat a proper meal. Some clinics hold the consultation on the day of arrival; others do it the next morning.
Day 2: the procedure
The day usually starts with a consultation, blood tests and the hairline design, which you approve before anything begins. The scalp is numbed with local anaesthesia, then the grafts are extracted from the donor area and implanted with the technique planned for you, whether DHI or Sapphire FUE. A session takes most of the day, with breaks for rest and food. Wear a loose, button-up shirt so nothing has to be pulled over your head afterwards.
Day 3: check-up and first wash
A check-up the day after surgery confirms that everything is healing as expected, and the first wash is usually done at the clinic so you can see how to continue at home. This is also the moment to ask your remaining questions and to make sure you have your medicines and written aftercare instructions.
Flying home
- Keep your head protected and avoid bumping the grafts in tight spaces such as overhead lockers.
- Wear the loose shirt again and keep your aftercare products in your hand luggage within liquid limits.
- Follow your clinic's advice on sleeping position if you rest on the plane.
The first two weeks at home
Sleep semi-upright for the first nights, expect some swelling of the forehead, and let the small crusts come away with gentle washing rather than picking at them. Itching is common; avoid scratching. Most routines are covered in our aftercare instructions, and when the time comes our guide to getting a haircut after a hair transplant explains when and how to book one.
Months one to twelve
Transplanted hairs usually shed in the first weeks, which is normal. New growth tends to appear from around the third or fourth month, and the result keeps improving until about the twelfth month, sometimes longer for the crown. Take photos every month in the same light; it is the easiest way to see real progress.
